What is latte art?

Latte art is the creation of decorative patterns on espresso-based drinks by pouring steamed milk into the shot, typically achieved through hand control and milk texture manipulation.

The pattern you see on the surface of a latte or flat white is made by pouring steamed milk into a shot of espresso. The barista controls the height, angle, and speed of the milk pitcher to manipulate the flow and color contrast between the dark espresso and white milk foam, forming the design in the cup itself rather than drawing on top.

Common designs include the rosetta (a leaf-like pattern with multiple lines), the heart (made by pouring a circular motion then drawing the pitcher through the center), and the tulip (stacked petal shapes). These patterns require precise control of milk texture, consistent espresso extraction, and practiced hand movements.

Latte art signals a barista's training and attention to detail. Creating it demands knowledge of how milk froths, how espresso flows, and how to combine both consistently. Many specialty coffee establishments in Ipoh feature baristas who practice latte art as part of their craft. While the pattern is purely visual and does not affect the taste, it reflects the care taken in preparation and has become an expected mark of quality in specialty coffee culture. You will find skilled latte art at specialty coffee providers throughout the city.
