About this directory
What this site is
Ipoh Cafe Guide is an independent directory covering 278 cafe businesses in Ipoh, built for anyone trying to work out where to actually go: locals hunting for a reliable second cafe near the office, visitors passing through Old Town, or owners checking how their own shop compares to the place two doors down. It’s not a listings dump. Every business on here is scored and ranked against the others using the same published rubric, so the order on the page means something.
We also generate enquiries for local providers. When you ask to be matched with a cafe or a related service, we pass your enquiry to providers relevant to your request, and we may receive a referral fee for doing so. That arrangement is disclosed on the quote page itself, and it never touches scores or rankings. A business cannot buy a better position, and a referral fee never changes what the data says about them.
Where the data comes from
Listings are built from public business information and a synthesis of recent Google reviews: patterns in what customers mention, how consistent the feedback is, and how it trends over time. We do not republish review text. If you want to read the original reviews, every listing links out to the business’s Google profile so you can check the source yourself.
How rankings are earned
Rankings come entirely from the data and a scoring method we’ve published in full at /methodology/, covering things like review consistency, recency, and volume. Nothing about a business’s placement is negotiable or purchasable. A listed business can flag and correct factual details about itself, like address, hours, or phone number, but it cannot edit its own score, its sentiment reading, or its position in the ranking. That separation is the whole point of the exercise: the facts can be fixed by the owner, the verdict can’t.
Sponsorship, when it appears
Some pages carry a sponsored placement. It’s always labelled “Sponsored”, shown in its own section separate from the earned ranking, and it has no bearing on where a business lands in the actual rankings. If you see a sponsored slot and a ranked list on the same page, treat them as two different things answering two different questions.
Who’s behind it
This directory is published by Waypoint Local Guides, which runs independent city directories for cafes and everyday services across Malaysia, starting here in Ipoh. Rankings are never sold, and every score traces back to the same public method. Editorial oversight sits with Sarah, Editor, who maintains the rubric and keeps the rankings honest against the data. You can reach the publisher directly at hello@waypoint.my or through waypoint.my.
Listings are refreshed monthly, and each one carries a “last verified” stamp so you can see it’s actively maintained rather than left to rot after launch.
